Online ABSN programs combine online nursing coursework with in-person clinical training and, depending on the program, campus-based labs or skills sessions. They can provide more flexibility than a traditional campus ABSN, but they are not fully online nursing degrees.
The table below compares accelerated BSN programs that offer a significant online component. Compare program length, estimated tuition, GPA requirements, location, and application deadlines. Use the individual school profiles to review each program’s specific online and in-person requirements.
Last reviewed: August 2026. Program formats, tuition, admission requirements, and deadlines can change. Confirm current requirements with each nursing school before applying.

Can You Complete an ABSN Fully Online?
No. Prelicensure nursing education requires hands-on clinical education, so an online ABSN still includes in-person components. Depending on the school, these may include clinical rotations, simulation labs, skills labs, orientations, or other campus visits.
The amount of online coursework also varies. Some programs deliver most classroom instruction online, while others use a more traditional hybrid schedule with both online and campus-based classes. For that reason, students should look beyond the word “online” and check exactly where each part of the program takes place.
What to Check Before Choosing an Online ABSN
An online format can make an accelerated nursing program more convenient, but location still matters. Before applying, compare:
- Clinical placement location: Find out where clinical rotations take place and whether the school arranges placements.
- Campus requirements: Check whether you must travel for labs, simulations, exams, orientation, or other activities.
- State eligibility: Confirm that the program accepts students who live in your state and meets applicable nursing education requirements there.
- Program pace: ABSN programs remain intensive even when coursework is online. Many are designed as full-time programs.
- Total cost: Compare tuition along with fees, travel, housing, supplies, and other expenses created by required in-person attendance.
- Licensure preparation: Confirm that the program is approved to provide prelicensure nursing education and that graduates are eligible to pursue RN licensure.
Distance nursing programs can face different requirements depending on the state where the student completes coursework or clinical education. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing recommends checking the requirements that apply in the student’s location.
