Compare Kansas City ABSN Programs

Kansas City has five accelerated nursing programs within a compact metro — and the differences between them are sharper than the geography suggests.

  • William Jewell posts the most consistent published NCLEX record in the region: 100% three years running.
  • Research College of Nursing offers up to 75% tuition forgiveness through HCA employment, producing the lowest effective net cost in the market.
  • Avila is the only Kansas City ABSN that doesn’t require a completed bachelor’s degree.
  • Rockhurst delivers its program almost entirely online with three annual start dates and the lowest GPA bar in the group.
  • UMKC logs more clinical hours than any other program in the region — 1,050 plus a 300-hour capstone — on a public-university Health Sciences campus.

Every program holds CCNE accreditation. What separates them is pace, format, cost after incentives, and what you need the program to do for you financially and professionally after graduation.

How to Choose the Best ABSN Program in Kansas City

Best Kansas City ABSN Programs by Goal

Best Kansas City ABSN Programs by Student Type

You want the lowest overall cost

Research College of Nursing — The HCA Midwest Health Work Loan Forgiveness program can cover up to 75% of tuition, reducing the effective cost to about $19,300 for graduates who complete a two-year RN commitment.

William Jewell College — If you don’t want an employment commitment, William Jewell offers the lowest published tuition among Kansas City’s traditional ABSN programs at approximately $40,500, with additional savings available through its Liberty Hospital partnership.

You want to become an RN as quickly as possible

William Jewell College or Research College of Nursing

Both programs can be completed in 12 months.

Choose William Jewell for the lowest published tuition and three consecutive years of 100% NCLEX pass rates.

Choose Research College of Nursing if employer-backed tuition forgiveness and direct HCA hiring opportunities are more important.

You don’t have a completed bachelor’s degree

Avila University

Avila is the only Kansas City ABSN that accepts applicants with 60+ college credits or an associate degree rather than requiring a completed bachelor’s. Missing prerequisites can be completed through Avila before enrollment.

You prefer online or hybrid coursework

Rockhurst University

Theory courses are delivered online, followed by a single 10-day Kansas City residency for labs and simulation. Clinical placements are coordinated near each student’s home, and three annual start dates provide more scheduling flexibility than most programs.

You want the strongest clinical training

UMKC or Research College of Nursing

Choose UMKC for the region’s deepest clinical experience, including 1,050 clinical hours plus a 300-hour capstone internship within its Health Sciences District.

Choose Research College of Nursing for its Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) model, where students work one-on-one with experienced nurses across six HCA Midwest Health hospitals.

You want the strongest NCLEX track record

William Jewell College

William Jewell has reported 100% first-time NCLEX pass rates for three consecutive graduating classes (2023–2025), the strongest sustained published performance among Kansas City ABSN programs.

You need more scheduling flexibility

Rockhurst University or Research College of Nursing

Rockhurst offers three annual start dates, while Research College admits new cohorts in both January and May, giving applicants multiple opportunities to begin without waiting a full year.

You want a public university experience

UMKC

UMKC combines one of the nation’s few dedicated Health Sciences Districts with tuition discounts for Kansas residents and students from additional Heartland states, making it the strongest public university option in the Kansas City market.

Which Program Length Is Right for You?

Need the fastest finish (12 months)?

Want 16 months with more flexibility or online coursework?

Want the most clinical hours and can commit to a longer timeline?

  • UMKC — 20 months (5 semesters); 1,050 hours + 300-hour capstone; Health Sciences District;

Lowest Cost

William Jewell College — $40,500: The lowest published tuition rate in Kansas City and the fastest timeline at 12 months. The Liberty Hospital partnership pathway can reduce net cost for eligible students who commit to post-graduation employment at Liberty Hospital — confirm terms and eligibility directly with William Jewell and Liberty Hospital before treating this as a guaranteed reduction.

Avila University — ~$41,236 (~$45,236 all-in): Avila bills at $676/credit for approximately 61 credits, totaling roughly $41,236 in tuition, with an estimated $4,000 in additional expenses (books, licensure fees, supplies) bringing the all-in total to approximately $45,236. Missing prerequisites may be completed through Avila’s online courses, which adds to the total depending on how many are outstanding.

Prerequisite Course Patterns

All five Kansas City programs require Anatomy & Physiology (I and II or separate courses), Microbiology, Chemistry, and Statistics. Pathophysiology appears as a standalone prerequisite at RCoN and William Jewell — completing it before enrollment reduces the in-program credit load at both schools.

Avila requires a TEAS score of 70% for admission — the only Kansas City program with a mandatory standardized test for all applicants.

RCoN requires a TEAS at Proficient level as part of its admissions scoring formula.

Science recency windows vary: RCoN requires A&P within 5 years — the tightest window in the group.

Rockhurst requires a TEAS admission exam if any science prerequisite is over 7 years old.

William Jewell allows sciences within 10 years but requires nursing-specific prerequisites (Pathophysiology, Nutrition) within 5 years.

UMKC requires Chemistry, A&P, and Microbiology to be no more than 5 years old.

UMKC has the most unusual pre-application requirement in the group: 30 hours of direct patient interaction (paid, volunteer, or training) completed within two years of applying. Shadowing a nurse who provides direct patient care is accepted. No other Kansas City program requires documented patient interaction before application submission.

Rockhurst’s three-start advantage: Three annual cohorts give Kansas City career changers the most frequent entry windows in the market. This is particularly valuable for students finishing prerequisites late in a calendar year who can’t wait 8–12 months for the next single annual cohort at William Jewell or Avila.

RCoN’s rolling admissions: Research College fills cohorts on a rolling basis — early application directly improves the chances of securing a January or May seat before the cohort closes. Once filled, the next start is the only option.

UMKC’s two-phase application: First, apply to UMKC as a Pre-Nursing student. Then submit the School of Nursing supplemental application during the November 1–January 31 window for fall entry. These are separate steps with separate deadlines; missing the supplemental window means waiting for the next cycle.

William Jewell’s March 1 deadline: Earlier than it appears for a May start. Applicants should complete NursingCAS applications well in advance, as the process can include an interview after initial review.

Clinical Training Structure

Most clinical hours: UMKC reports 1,050 clinical hours across five semesters — including adult medical-surgical, pediatrics, maternal/obstetrics, mental health, community health, critical care, and leadership — plus a 300-hour final-semester capstone internship in a chosen specialty area. This total exceeds the clinical hours at the other four Kansas City programs combined. The program uses daytime class scheduling, freeing evenings and weekends for students to manage outside obligations alongside an intensive clinical rotation load.

DEU mentorship model: Research College of Nursing operates the region’s largest Dedicated Education Unit across six HCA Midwest Health hospitals — a clinical model where students receive one-on-one mentorship from experienced nurses during direct patient care rather than the small-group rotation model common at most programs. RCoN describes this as available nowhere else in the Kansas City region, and the intensity of the relationship between students and working nurses creates a direct hiring pipeline into HCA. The Class of 2024 achieved a 100% NCLEX pass rate under this model.

Placement support: Rockhurst’s dedicated placement coordinator handles all site and preceptor matching for online students — a meaningful operational advantage for career changers who can’t spend time sourcing their own clinical placements. Students complete approximately 583.5 hours in care settings within reasonable driving distance of home.

Simulation: William Jewell’s internationally endorsed simulation center supports both traditional and hybrid track students.

Avila’s NERC provides advanced simulation technology with access before and alongside clinical rotations.

Rockhurst uses Saint Luke’s renovated simulation facilities during the 10-day Kansas City residency.

UMKC pairs its simulation center with clinical training in the Health Sciences District.
