Tuition estimates exclude additional costs unless identified; transfer credit, residency and cohort billing can change the amount you pay.
Kentucky ABSN Programs at a Glance
Estimate basis: Figures marked “Est.” are planning estimates at published rates, not guaranteed cohort prices. Profile articles explain billing assumptions, residency and fees. Amounts labelled “incl. fees” are not tuition-only totals.
| School | Est. Tuition | Duration | GPA | Start |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Bellarmine University Louisville | $52,490; books included | 12 months | 3.0 | January, May |
Northern Kentucky University Highland Heights | Est. $25,312 incl. mandatory fees | 16 months | 3.0 cumulative | Fall |

How to Compare Kentucky ABSN Programs
- Time to start: compare prerequisite completion and application cycles alongside program length.
- Attendance: consider campus sessions, clinical travel and Joyce’s required Utah immersions.
- Admission fit: compare cumulative, science and prerequisite GPAs using each school’s definition.
- Total obligation: compare tuition, fees, transfer adjustments and employer funding conditions.
Compare the time until you can actually start, not only the advertised nursing sequence. Prerequisites, transfer evaluation, application verification and a missed cohort deadline can extend the overall timeline.
Best Kentucky ABSN Programs by Goal
Use your priorities to build a shortlist. These matches reflect program features rather than an overall school ranking.
Finish a Kentucky-based nursing sequence quickly: Bellarmine University offers the shortest listed sequence at 12 months; Spalding University follows at 13 months.
Choose fall or spring entry: University of Kentucky offers both starts with separate application windows.
Study near Greater Cincinnati: Northern Kentucky University provides a 16-month campus cohort in Highland Heights.
Keep a western Kentucky training option: University of Louisville offers Owensboro alongside Louisville.
Build toward graduate nursing study: University of Louisville includes eight graduate credits, subject to required grades and later MSN admission.
Combine online academics with Kentucky clinicals: Joyce University serves eligible Kentucky residents, with three required Utah immersions and transfer-dependent completion time.
Explore employer support for tuition: Bellarmine University has employer scholarship pathways; compare award coverage, work commitments and repayment terms before accepting.
Program Format and Required Attendance
| School | Format and Length | Attendance and Curriculum |
|---|---|---|
12-month campus cohort | Louisville; 58 nursing credits, intensive full-time study. | |
16-month campus cohort | Highland Heights; simulation and clinical learning from the first semester. | |
13-month hybrid cohort | Louisville; 56 nursing credits, June entry and program-arranged clinicals. | |
16-month hybrid pathway | Lexington; eight blocks across four semesters, including summer. | |
15-month hybrid pathway | Louisville/Owensboro; 60 nursing credits over four terms and eight graduate credits with later MSN conditions. | |
Transfer-dependent hybrid degree | Kentucky clinicals plus three Utah skills/simulation immersions; as few as 20 months with sufficient transfer credit. |
Online academic work still requires in-person labs, skills learning and clinical rotations. Plan for transportation and assigned shifts; confirm the entering cohort’s schedule before arranging employment or childcare.
Joyce is an out-of-state university serving eligible Kentucky residents. Students complete online academic work, direct-care clinical rotations in Kentucky and three skills/simulation immersions near Salt Lake City. Budget airfare or other travel, lodging and meals for Utah attendance.
UK describes its nursing schedule as eight blocks across four semesters, including summer. UofL’s current catalog organizes 60 nursing credits over summer, fall, spring and a final summer. Use the entering cohort’s schedule to assess employment, childcare and commuting needs.
Admissions and Prerequisite Differences
Most of these accelerated routes are designed for students with a bachelor’s degree outside nursing. UK also admits eligible military medics, licensed practical nurses and approved dual-degree students. Each school evaluates prerequisites and transfer credit individually.
| School | Admission GPA | Prerequisite and Transfer Details |
|---|---|---|
3.0 admission GPA | Review its full science and support-course checklist and NursingCAS requirements. | |
3.0 cumulative | At least two science prerequisites complete to apply. Sciences have a five-year recency rule, and recent low prerequisite or nursing grades can affect eligibility. | |
2.75 science core | Applicants with science GPA 2.5–2.74 may be considered with 3.0 cumulative GPA. Its 24-credit prerequisite block includes chemistry, anatomy/physiology with labs, microbiology with lab, pathophysiology, psychology and research. | |
2.5 cumulative and science | Anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, psychology/social science and composition must meet application requirements; microbiology, nutrition and statistics are due before nursing begins. | |
2.8 cumulative recommended; 3.0 prerequisites recommended | Complete at least two natural-science prerequisites by the application deadline; the full 22-credit block is due before upper division. The 2.4 lower-division GPA applies to prerequisite entry at UofL. | |
2.75 prior-degree GPA | There are no outside course prerequisites merely to apply, but finishing in 20 months requires 46 qualifying transfer credits, including anatomy/physiology with lab and statistics. |
Do not assume every school requires the same chemistry, lab or development course. Obtain a transcript evaluation before enrolling in prerequisites. CNA/SRNA preparation, CPR, background screening and health-compliance deadlines also differ between programs.
Start Terms and Application Deadlines
| School | Start | Application Timing |
|---|---|---|
January and May | Apply through NursingCAS; confirm the entering cohort’s deadline. | |
Fall | January 15. | |
June | Confirm the accelerated cohort deadline with nursing admissions. | |
Fall or spring | Fall: October 15–March 1. Spring: June 1–August 15. | |
Summer nursing sequence | Priority: August 15–November 15. Verified NursingCAS applications through January 10 if space remains. | |
Three annual starts | Rolling admission; confirm the next start and completion deadlines. |
Application windows are not interchangeable with program start dates. Allow time for official transcripts, transfer decisions, NursingCAS verification where applicable and clinical screening. A rolling process for a school’s RN-to-BSN does not establish rolling ABSN admission.
Tuition, Fees and Financial Planning
The estimates below use published rates with explicit assumptions about credits, billing classification and term loads. Compare tuition-only estimates separately from amounts that include mandatory fees; prerequisites, travel and living costs are additional.
| School | Tuition, Fees and Individual Budget |
|---|---|
Published tuition is $52,490, including books, with approximately $5,000 in course fees. Employer scholarships may reduce out-of-pocket cost but can require an employment commitment and repayment if conditions are not met. | |
Est. $25,312 incl. mandatory fees | |
Est. $29,400 | |
Est. $25,428 | |
Est. $26,780 | |
The published 85-credit cost model gives $60,520 tuition. For new Spring 2027 enrollment, a $3,710 NCLEX Resource Fee brings the listed total to $64,230; Fall 2026 uses a $3,510 fee and $64,030 total. Transfer credits and Utah travel change the individual budget. |
Ask employer-funded programs which charges are covered, when assistance is paid, how long you must work for the sponsor and what repayment is required if you leave. Compare the total obligation alongside grants, loans and scholarships.
Clinical Experience and NCLEX Outcomes
All six options include hands-on nursing education. Bellarmine’s catalog describes 630 combined clinical and assessment lab/clinical hours; Spalding advertises 750 required clinical hours; UK’s dated sample plan separates 440–470 clinical and 64 lab hours; UofL advertises over 500 clinical hours. Joyce’s 517.5 training hours combine simulation and direct care. These measures use different definitions and should not be ranked as identical clinical-hour totals.
For outcomes, use a reporting year and the same exam population. The Kentucky Board of Nursing’s March 2026 report supplies the school/campus BSN first-time results below; it does not isolate accelerated cohorts.
| School / Campus | 2025 First-Time BSN NCLEX | 2023–2025 Aggregate |
|---|---|---|
95.3% (101/106) | 93.0% (359/386) | |
100% (84/84) | 99.6% (264/265) | |
92.9% (13/14) | 82.1% (55/67) | |
94.7% (266/281) | 95.6% (805/842) | |
78.7% (181/230) | 84.6% (511/604) | |
89.1% (49/55) | 92.3% (132/143) |
Joyce reports a university-wide 2025 BSN first-time pass rate of 83.73%; it is not a Kentucky-specific or ABSN-only result. Exam outcomes describe past cohorts and do not guarantee an individual result. Confirm current educational eligibility and application requirements with the Kentucky Board of Nursing before seeking licensure.
