Program Overview
Southeastern’s 18-month, campus-based ABSN offers Hammond/Baton Rouge and Northshore options for prior-degree students, with cohort study, clinical learning and simulation.
The BSN requires 120 total degree credits, including nursing, prerequisites and general education. Prior-degree transfer credit determines the remaining courses a student must complete.
Southeastern Louisiana University offers an accelerated option for students with a bachelor’s degree outside nursing. The Hammond/Baton Rouge pathway splits approximately half its coursework between the Hammond campus and Baton Rouge Center.
The Northshore pathway operates primarily from the St. Tammany Academic Center near Covington, with all classes and laboratory/clinical experiences on the Northshore. Its St. Tammany Health System partnership provides priority clinical placement, scholarship application opportunities and early applications for competitive nursing positions.
Accreditation
Southeastern’s BSN is CCNE accredited, and the LSBN list identifies full approval for its baccalaureate program. The university is institutionally accredited by SACSCOC. Graduation and board requirements determine eligibility for NCLEX-RN and RN licensure.
Admissions Requirements
- A completed bachelor’s degree outside nursing for the accelerated option.
- Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA in degree prerequisites, under the current nursing progression policy.
- C or better in prerequisite courses and an approved transfer evaluation.
- Completion of the required biology/anatomy sequence within six regular semesters, with C or better.
- University admission and a separate Application for Progression in the School of Nursing.
- Required physical examination, drug screening, state/federal background checks and AHA healthcare-provider CPR.
The 2026–27 nursing department policy lists February 1 for fall progression and September 1 for spring progression. Its prior-degree section says accelerated students are usually admitted in spring or summer; confirm the accelerated cohort’s deadline and site availability rather than assuming a general fall deadline establishes a fall ABSN start.
Admission is selective and limited by resources. Prior nursing transfer students must provide good-standing letters. Enrolled students must maintain a 2.5 degree GPA, 2.3 major GPA and C or better in required nursing courses; course-repeat limits also apply.
Prerequisites
The prior-degree pathway permits evaluation of first-degree credits for prerequisite requirements. Use the current BSN catalog and nursing advising to determine the courses remaining.
- Biology and anatomy/physiology sequences with required laboratories.
- Medical microbiology and laboratory.
- Chemistry, nutrition and statistics.
- English composition, psychology and developmental psychology.
- Approved sociology, communication, literature, humanities and fine-arts requirements.
The six-regular-semester biology rule is separate from transfer-credit acceptance. All transcripts and the approved prerequisite plan should be on file before the nursing progression review.
Curriculum
The current BSN catalog lists 61 nursing and nursing-laboratory credits within a 120-credit degree. The department offers its prior-degree accelerated option within that BSN, with prerequisite transfer evaluation. The subject groups below show the published BSN course requirements; they are not an accelerated semester timetable. Clinical Experience
Clinical nursing uses selected agencies across Southeast Louisiana, with campus assignments determined by the admitted pathway. Nursing labs accompany assessment, foundations, adult/gerontological care, maternal and pediatric nursing, advanced practice and community health.
Students must keep CPR and clinical health requirements current. The department requires background screening at first clinical admission and again for licensure application at graduation. Nursing lab attendance, screenings and professional behavior are essential to continued clinical eligibility.
Tuition and Costs
Estimated cost: $14,445 resident tuition. Planning assumption: five accelerated nursing terms at current $2,889 full-time tuition. The 120 credits are the whole degree, including transferable prerequisite/general education credits, not 120 new billed credits. Nursing and university fees additional; actual cohort term loads may differ.
The Fall 2026/Spring 2027 undergraduate schedule separates $2,889 tuition at 12 credits from mandatory fees, ID validation and textbook rental, giving $4,855 in listed resident tuition and fees. At 12 credits, its additional nonresident fee is $6,239, for a listed total of $11,094.
The displayed Summer 2026 12-credit schedule uses $2,889 tuition and a $4,524 resident inclusive total. These are term examples, not a confirmed ABSN program quote; accelerated credit loads, summer changes, professional-degree fees, differential charges and credits above the standard band affect cost.
- Nursing students pay a professional-degree fee each clinical semester.
- Additional course fees, equipment, screening, health documentation and clinical transportation may apply.
- Board and NCLEX fees are separate near graduation.
- Eligible Northshore students may apply for St. Tammany scholarships; this is not a universal tuition guarantee or guaranteed job.
